Getting A Job At Samsung

As a leading name in cutting-edge technology, careers at Samsung offer one of the most exciting opportunities within the industry. It's a business heavily focused on its people and looks to recruit and retain the most promising talent in technical innovation.

For those starting out on their professional careers, Samsung provides graduate roles through its Emerging Talent programme. These two-year placements offer hands-on work experience combined with learning and development opportunities.

Competition for these posts is tough, making preparation key to success. Understanding the recruitment process and the values that drive the company forward is the first step.

Samsung's Values

Samsung works by a set of core values that underpin every business decision made and define its working culture. These values are:

People - it invests in its employees, supporting them to achieve their full potential.

Excellence - it aims to be a market leader, developing products and services of exceptional quality.

Change - it looks ahead to determine future needs of its markets, and sets business objectives accordingly.

Integrity - it's a brand driven by ethics with a moral commitment to all its stakeholders.

Co-prosperity - this refers to its corporate social responsibility, and Samsung's obligation to improve the communities in which it operates.

As a prospective employee you'll be expected to share these values, and to demonstrate them throughout the recruitment process.

Types Of Roles

Opportunities on the Emerging Talent programme exist in multiple business areas, including:

  • Sales
  • Marketing
  • Product Management
  • Finance
  • Technical
  • People
  • Customer Experience
  • Paralegal

Each area requires a specific skill set, and it's advisable to explore them all in full. Not only will this help you choose the right path for you, but will help you understand how its various departments work together to drive business success.

Hiring Process At Samsung

There are four stages to the Samsung recruitment process. Each stage is designed to screen for the most promising tech talent, and you'll need to pass through each one to progress to the next.

The Job Application Process

The first step is to find a relevant opening on the Samsung career portal. You'll then need to complete the online application and upload your most recent CV - make sure this is tailored to the job description.

Recruitment is done on a rolling basis, so to give yourself the best chance of progressing, apply as early as you can.

Complete Online Assessments

Your application will then be screened, and if you meet the qualifying criteria you'll be sent an invitation to complete a series of online assessments. These are timed, skills-based assessments that measure natural abilities in three key areas.

You'll need around 40 minutes to complete them all.

Logical Reasoning Tests

The logical reasoning test is used to determine your problem-solving skills. It does so by asking you to identify relationships that pertain to abstract patterns and sequences.

For each question, you'll see a sequence containing shapes and symbols arranged according to a set of rules, part of which will be omitted. You'll need to work out the sequential rule to fill in the gap from multiple-choice options.

Verbal Reasoning Tests

There are several question types found in a verbal reasoning test, all of which measure your ability to process new information. The most common requires you to read a passage of text, and then to determine from the information provided if a given statement is true or false, or if you cannot say.

You may also come across questions that ask you to evaluate the strength of an argument, identify assumptions or inferences, or state whether or not a conclusion logically follows.

Numerical Reasoning Tests

The numerical reasoning test shows your ability to work with data and statistical information found in graphs, charts, and tables. Again, this is a multiple-choice test where you'll need to interpret the numerical information provided to correctly respond to a word-based problem.

Though this is not a maths test as such, you will still need to understand the basics of things like percentages and ratios and have a strong grasp of foundational arithmetic.

Virtual Interview

If you successfully pass the online assessments, you'll be invited to submit a virtual interview. This is a one-way interview, where you'll respond to a series of pre-recorded questions.

These are competencies and are used to learn more about your experience, motivations, and working style. You'll either be given 30 or 60 seconds to record your response, so you'll need to be articulate, and provide a well-structured answer with supporting examples.

Assessment Centre

The final stage in the Samsung recruitment process is attendance at its assessment centre. This is a full day of immersive activities through which you'll experience what working life at Samsung is like, and the hiring team will see your skills in action.

You should be prepared to take part in a group exercise, an individual task relevant to your future role, and a face-to-face interview. Only the most promising candidates will make it through to the final stage, so you'll need to perform at your very best to stand out amongst your competitors.

What's It Like To Work At Samsung?

As a Samsung employee, you'll be part of a collaborative environment in which the creativity of a diverse workforce is harnessed. You'll be at the forefront of innovation, supporting the business in its mission to make a positive impact through new technologies.

You'll also have plenty of scope for professional development, as Samsung believes in empowering its people to achieve things they thought unobtainable.

Top Tips To Getting Hired At Samsung

Know Why You Want To Join Samsung

Your motivations for applying to Samsung will form a key part of the selection process, from your initial application through to your face-to-face interview. It's not enough to simply want to work in the industry - you'll need to talk enthusiastically about what Samsung stands for, what it looks to achieve, and why you feel it's the ideal place to put your talents to use.

Do Your Research

The more informed you are about Samsung the better impression you'll make, and the more you'll be able to show how your skills and ambitions can contribute to its purpose. Pay close attention to its mission, values, and business principles.

Practice The Tests

Practicing for the online assessments is key to putting in a competitive performance. Though they measure natural abilities, the added time pressure and the circumstances under which they're taken increase their difficulty. Plenty of practice will help you master your technique and calm your nerves.

Prepare For Virtual Interviews

Speaking into a camera can feel unnatural for some, so it's important to practice for this stage too. There's no predicting the exact questions you'll face, but try preparing answers to some common competency-based questions, recording them, and making notes for improvement. Focus particularly on body language, and maintaining 'virtual eye contact'.
